January 9, 2024 Severe Weather Threat

NC State is closely monitoring the severe weather forecast impacting much of the state this afternoon, Tuesday, Jan. 9, with the potential for heavy rainfall, localized flooding, damaging winds and the possibility of isolated tornadoes. The height of the storm is expected to hit central N.C. between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m.

At this time, NC State is operating under normal conditions: no change in operating condition. Additional updates will be shared through WolfAlert, and on the university’s homepage and social media channels should they become necessary. If you hear the university’s sirens, please seek shelter immediately.

Please monitor weather updates from the National Weather Service forecast and local news outlets throughout the day for the most up-to-date information on the storm. Under these conditions, employees and students are encouraged to take necessary precautions to stay safe as the day continues. Severe weather preparedness

  • Do not drive in high water.
  • Watch for falling limbs or power lines.
  • Avoid using an umbrella in high winds.
  • Be aware of your surroundings when walking outdoors during high winds and seek shelter for safety.
  • Monitor emergency communications for immediate emergency situations, such as tornadoes, thunderstorms and straight-line winds.
  • Shelter-in-place locations are identified as interior locations on a low level away from windows.
